About Us

Carrying on a Texas Legacy with Heart, History & Honky-Tonk Soul

As a husband-and-wife team born and raised right here in San Antonio, we’ve always had a deep appreciation for our city’s rich history and vibrant culture. Growing up, we heard stories about legendary honky-tonks like Texas Star Inn, where country music, dancing, and community came together under one roof. Those memories sparked a lifelong love for classic country music — and inspired a dream to bring that spirit back to life.

With a background in real-estate development and a shared passion for bringing people together, we saw an opportunity to revive the honky-tonk tradition and create a place where family and friends can gather, enjoy great food, and make lasting memories — just like the Texas dance halls of the past.

A San Antonio Landmark Since 1946

The Texas Star Inn first opened its doors in 1946 as a beer joint and dance hall along Bandera Highway in Leon Valley. In 1952, it was purchased by Papa Frank and Mama Aselee “Mattie” Klein, who made it a cornerstone of local country music culture. Papa Klein, a talented guitarist and singer, led his own band — The Texas Star Playboys — right from this very stage.

Over the years, the Inn became a true Texas icon, hosting country legends such as Willie Nelson, Ray Price, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, and more — all of whom are honored on the wall above our stage. It was even the site of Johnny Bush’s first paying gig in 1954.

When the dance hall closed in 1993, the building became part of the Grady’s Bar-B-Q chain, serving the community for three more decades until 2023.

Reviving the Legacy

In January 2025, the Texas Star Inn returned to its roots — reopening under its original name and honoring the spirit that made it famous. Today, we proudly serve classic Texas fare — smoky barbecue, juicy burgers, and chicken-fried steak — while keeping the music alive with live country shows every Friday and Saturday night.

We’re more than a restaurant and bar; we’re a living piece of San Antonio’s musical history — where the past meets the present, and every guest becomes part of the story.

Welcome to Texas Star Inn, where the music is classic, the atmosphere is warm, and every meal is served with a side of true Texas hospitality.
